On this day 7 years ago the hip hop community lost a legendary figure. DJ Jam Master Jay was murdered in a Queens, New York studio for reasons still unknown. The Source remembers JMJ, the man behind the Run DMC sound.

Gone are the days when children solely strived to be one of three things when they grew up: doctor, lawyer, or engineer. For the youth of this generation, careers in the arts are quickly moving to the forefront as feasible professions. With the help of arts programs in schools, students who may not have always thought of themselves as “creative”, but who have the ability, are able to become engaged and have their creative skills cultivated.

Rev Run, DMC & JMJ’s Mother Speak At ‘Run DMC JMJ Way’ Naming
The corner of Hollis Ave and 205th Street in Hollis, Queens will forever be known as Run DMC JMJ Way. The event was organized by City Councilman Leroy Comrie and hosted by radio personality, Ed Lover. Guests included: Bill Adler, DJ Scratch, Kangol Kid (UTFO), and Rahiem (Furious 5).

New York City Street To Be Named After RUN-DMC
The New York City Council approved a new bill that a major thoroughfare Run-DMC JMJ Way, in Hollis Queens, will be named after legendary rap group Run-DMC.
The bill, which was introduced by Deputy Majority Leader Leroy Comrie (D-27) passed today during the Council’s Stated Meeting in City Hall.
Once Mayor Michael Bloomberg signs the bill into law, the corner of 205th Street and Hollis Avenue will officially be renamed after the pioneering Hip-Hop group.

DMC a Hard Rock?
On Friday, April 2nd, the Hard Rock Cafe at the New Yankee Stadium had its official grand opening. Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee Daryl “DMC” McDaniels of legendary rap duo Run-DMC was one of the many celebrity musicians in attendance.
Others included KISS drummer Ace Frehley, Anthrax’s Scott Ian and Frank Bello, and Anton Fig of the Late Show Band. Former Yankee and jazz musician Bernie Williams also attended the rock star studded event and led a group of young musicians through a rendition of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”. The event concluded with a guitar smashing by the artists, which officially marked the opening of the new venue.
The Hard Rock Cafe at Yankee Stadium is located to the right of Gate 6 and is open daily for lunch and dinner to the general public all year round.

Fame for the Kings
Saturday night in Cleveland, Ohio, Eminem helped induct Hip-Hop pioneers Run-DMC into the 2009 Rock Hall of Fame. Slim Shady dressed the part as he donned the group’s signature black leather jacket as he introduced audiences to Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons and Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels. Congrats to the Kings of Rock…
