NY’s Back-to-School Stimulus: Too Much Help or Not Nearly Enough?

New York is definitely making headlines. On August 11th, Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Patterson announced that $140 million dollars from the federal government will be given out to low income families in an effort to help out with school supplies and all other back to school essentials. To make matters more interesting, billionaire (and apparent philanthropist) Geroge Soros, who claims to be once a recipient of charity himself, donated a hefty $35 million to the pot as well. The result? Needy families all over the state will receive one-time payments of $200 for each school-aged child between the ages of 3 and 17. (Do the math- if you have three kids that are like 5,7 and 9, you will receive $600). Over 850,000 public assistance debit cards have been credited with the no strings attached funds, which will expire in 90 days. It’s a sneaky little way to help out the economy (by giving revenue to those that will most likely spend it shopping- returning the money to the economy- rather than paying bills or saving it) but whatever works, right?

The Day With No Social Networking
For those of you who tweet and broadcast every trivial detail of your otherwise boring lives, I’m sure you were baffled as to why you had trouble logging in to your Twitter and Facebook accounts yesterday morning. The two communication giants experienced severe technical problems after undergoing a denial-of-service attack. Because of this, the popular website Facebook suffered from very slow to non-functioning features whereas its crackishly addictive counterpart Twitter was completely inaccessible for several hours. Thousands of folks were found frantically running through the streets overcome with confusion, sadness and anger because they experienced such a great loss in the community (just kidding, but it wouldn’t have been a total surprise to see that).

Happy Birthday, Mr. President

Many important things happened in 1961. Motown Records signed The Supremes and the Temptations, founders of the Black Panther Party; Huey Newton and Bobby Seale met, and on August 4th, our 44th and first African-American President Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Today Barack is spending the actual day of his birthday with the Senate and Joe Biden; he spent the weekend celebrating with his friends and family.
As a present to himself and friends, President Obama went bowling at Camp David and finished with 144. A huge upgrade from his bowling back in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary during a campaign stop, a sad 37, which led to much mockery and grief from the media.
