Jay-Z Replacing Beastie Boys at All Points West

On the heels of the shocking announcement of Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys’ having cancer, Jay-Z has stepped up to replace the Beastie Boys at the All Points West festival in New Jersey. On July 31st, Hova will top the bill with a mostly rock card which includes Coldplay, Tool, MGMT, The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and more. Jigga has headlined festivals overseas like England’s Glastonbury Festival, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival and London’s O2 Wireless Festival, but this will be his first time headlining a major United States festival.
One of the festival’s organizers, Paul Tollett of Goldenvoice, spoke with TheSource.Com about getting Jay-Z on such short notice. “Right of the bat, we just said ‘let’s go after Jay-Z,’ we’ve never promoted him before, said Tollett. “I think under the circumstances of what happened to Adam, any other time it would take weeks or months to make this happen. I just laid it out saying what happened with the Beastie Boys and we are looking for some one to help make this show happen. It was really great that he was so open to doing the show. Sometimes you just get what you want when you have no back-up plan.”

Viva La Hova

“That bloke from Oasis said I couldn’t play guitar / Somebody shoulda told him I’ma f**kin rockstar” –Jay-Z on “Dopeboy Fresh (Jockin’ Jay-Z)”
If you’re not convinced by Jay-Z’s claim to rock stardom, pick up the Mick Boogie & Terry Urban mash up mixtape, Viva La Hova. While Jay ain’t exactly strumming power chords, his rap lyrics rock hard enough over Coldplay’s instrumentation. It’s enough to make the most diehard alternative fans give him the co-sign.
