Obama Attested, Senate Approved: Sonia Sotomayor to be 1st Hispanic Supreme Court Justice
2009 seems to be the year for rewriting the history books in the United States. For starters, it was the swearing in of the nation’s first African American president Barack Obama and now the appointment of the first Hispanic American Supreme court justice. Judge Sonia Sotomayor was approved yesterday by the Senate in a 68-31 vote to become the country’s 111th justice- making her the third woman in history to ever receive that honor. President Obama even went on to say the event is “breaking another barrier and moving us yet another step closer to a more perfect union.” Perfect or not, many doors are now open which were once closed and thought unattainable by any means (take advantage, people!) Happy Birthday, Mr. President

Many important things happened in 1961. Motown Records signed The Supremes and the Temptations, founders of the Black Panther Party; Huey Newton and Bobby Seale met, and on August 4th, our 44th and first African-American President Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Today Barack is spending the actual day of his birthday with the Senate and Joe Biden; he spent the weekend celebrating with his friends and family.
As a present to himself and friends, President Obama went bowling at Camp David and finished with 144. A huge upgrade from his bowling back in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary during a campaign stop, a sad 37, which led to much mockery and grief from the media.

Obama: ‘Our Kids Can’t Aspire To Be Lil’ Wayne or LeBron
Last night (July 16) President Obama added another highlight to his reel of landmark speeches. The President spoke to the NAACP about topics of education and personal responsibility at the organization’s 100th anniversary celebration. In the speech, Obama stated, “they might think they’ve got a pretty good jump shot or a pretty good flow, but our kids can’t all aspire to be the next LeBron or Lil Wayne. I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers,” The President said. “I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court Justice. I want them aspiring to be President of the United States. So, yes, government must be a force for opportunity. Yes, government must be a force for equality. But ultimately, if we are to be true to our past, then we also have to seize our own destiny, each and every day.”
Hit the jump to watch the entire speech.

Sotomayer Vies For Supreme Court Justice
This morning Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, sat before the Senate Judiciary Committee for the first hearings in consideration of the Bronx native for the next seat as a Supreme Court Justice. Recent statements made by Sotomayor have been seen as controversial to many in the senate, and today’s hearings addressed the issue head on.
