2008’s Political Losers

Number four is still in office (just not the one she hoped to be in) but most of these politicians will be relegated to book deals and syndicated radio in 2009.
5. George Bush – Why isn’t he number one, you ask? Well, he’s had seven years as the worst politician in the country. Let someone else have a chance.
4. Sarah Palin – What feminist wouldn’t want to see a charming mother of five in the White House? Well, given Palin’s views on reproductive rights – just about none. The folksy “maverick” may have been the best thing for Saturday Night Live’s ratings, but she would’ve been the worst thing for the country.

The “Magic Negro” Controversy

A Christmas gift from Chip Saltsman, a candidate for the Republican National Committee chairmanship, has caused quite the stir.
Saltsman sent CDs, which included the track “Barack the Magic Negro,” to RNC members. The spoof of “Puff the Magic Dragon” was first heard on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show last year.
Mike Duncan, the current chairman and Saltsman rival, was the first GOP member to speak out.
In a statement criticizing Saltsman “joke,” Duncan said, “The 2008 election was a wake-up call for Republicans to reach out and bring more people into our party. I am shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate, as it clearly does not move us in the right direction.”
Ken Blackwell, an African-American running against Saltsman and Duncan has defended Saltsman.

Federal Interest Rate Cut

The Federal Reserve announced this week that it is cutting the key interest rate from 1% to range from 0% to .25%. This is a drastic change and is the first time that the rate has fallen bellow 1%. The Fed’s range is also a new measure since the interest rate is usually a set number.

Obama Says Gov Should Step Down

Barack Obama released the following statement through a spokesman, “The president-elect agrees with Lt. Gov. Quinn (Illinois lieutenant governor) and many others that under the current circumstances it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois.”
Governor Rod Blagojevich, along with his chief of staff, was arrested this week on federal corruption charges after being caught on wiretap trying to sell Obama’s empty Senate seat.

The World Sons Dubya
Last week, financial leaders from around the world came together in Brazil for the G-20 Summit. The Summit was created “to promote dialogue between advanced and emerging countries on key issues regarding economic growth and stability of the financial system.”
But watch how all the other world leaders diss Bush. While everyone is all handshakes and hugs, he gets no love.
Obama 08! Yes we can (get our respect back).

Two States Vote Green

On Election Day Massachusetts voted to soften marijuana possession penalties. Maybe it was the support of the Greater Boston Civil Rights Coalition and American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) that did the trick - the support for the ballot measure was more than expected.
Under the new laws, if you’re caught with an ounce of weed or less, the punishment is only a citation and a $100 fine.
Michigan voters approved the decriminalization of marijuana for medical use.

No Charges For Spitzer

Former New York Governor John Eliot Spitzer is off the hook for seeking the “services” of a high-priced prostitution ring. He will face no charges.
You may recall that Spitzer’s fall from grace earlier this year made a political milestone possible. Current New York Governor, and former Lt. Governor, David Paterson who replaced Spitzer, is the first Black Governor of New York and the first blind governor of any state.
