Melody Thornton

Meet Arizona native Melody Thornton, the doll who packs quite a punch vocally and has never been afraid to speak her mind.
WORDS_Kiko Michaels

When the Pussycat Dolls first burst onto the music scene in 2005, the world was introduced to five sassy, strong and sexy women with a succession of chart topping hits. But there was always that one, who was just a bit sassier than the rest. With The Pussycat Dolls on hiatus and an upcoming solo effort underway, Melody Thornton is simply not ready to call it quits.

So what have you been up to the past couple of months?
The past couple of months have been interesting—a lot of work behind the scenes. It’s new and exciting for me because it’s aside from the group. The group is on a break. A good, hefty, fantastic break. I’m excited about it because it’s given me an opportunity to actually work just on my own direction and what I want to do, which is sing on my own. I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve, actually.

Are you looking forward to the group coming back from the break?
I’m looking forward to wherever the Lord guides me.

What is your sound as a solo artist? Is it different from the group’s sound?
Definitely, but I’m not going to abandon that pop demographic that I acquired through the Pussycat Dolls. But it’s not popular-for-the-moment, the kind of music that I’m making. It’s live instrumentation and it derives from ‘60s influences. It’s just kind of what I was raised on, James Brown, BB King-ish as far as instrumentation goes. But vocally, I admire Mariah Carey and was raised on Aretha Franklin, Jackson 5 and all of that, so it’s not going to be like Pussycat Dolls at all.

Do you think the direction you are taking will surprise the fan base you already have?
I hope they are pleased. When I talk to my dad on the phone he’s like, “Make sure you get something you can really sing on.” The fans know that’s what I did for the Dolls. I was like the little trumpet in the back hitting all the high notes. I think they’ll support it for sure. People who like Melody out of the Pussycat Dolls want to hear her sing. Sing sing, not just hum.

What do you think fans would be surprised to know about you?
I collect antiques. I like things that have a story. Everything in my house has a story. All of my jewelry is antique.

You’ve definitely been a lot more outspoken than the other girls in the group about various situations. You’ve voiced at times some discontentment with things that were going on. Many artists in those situations find it hard to speak up. Why was it easier for you?

I don’t think that there is anything wrong with the truth because what’s done in the dark will come to light anyway, regardless of how people perceived me in that moment. Some people were excited about it, and others thought I shouldn’t have said anything. And if anyone was going to say anything, it should have been me. I was the other singer in the group. I am the one who didn’t sing as much and to stifle me even further by adding to the embarrassment, I should have been the one to say something.

Do you have any regrets?
Not at all.

The styling for this shoot was amazing. I loved the all black and adding the shoe accessories to transform it from ordinary was a smart move!
