Obama Brushes Haters Off, Again

Posted: Dec 23, 2010 by Selamawit "Sully" Mulugeta

After being spanked by Republicans in the 2010 Congressional Elections, President Obama gave Democrats in Washington a collective ego boost after championing the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,”  extending tax cuts for the middle class, and finally securing the Russian-American arms treaty. In the midst of immense criticism for his catering to conservatives, Obama cemented his progressive prowess with the roaring defeat of a policy that prevents gays from serving openly in the military. He took a step even further by rallying his opponents to pass an $858 billion package that extends tax cuts for two more years, as well as jobless benefits for an additional 13 months. By a shocking 71-26 victory in the Senate, the President achieved the ratification of “The New Start” treaty which unites the US and Russia against Iran’s uranium enrichment program and lays out a plan to eliminate nuclear weapons entirely. According to the New York Times, “No Russian-American arms treaty submitted for a Senate vote ever squeaked through by a smaller margin….It was welcome validation that [the President] could still win a battle.” In a matter of weeks, President Obama wrangled bi-partisan support for historic legislation, achieved international loyalty, and stomped Republican resistance. Now off to Hawaii…
