EXCLUSIVE Setting The Record Straight: The Facts about L. Londell McMillan and the Michael Jackson Case
The Source Mind Squad has been quietly watching as some media outlets and bloggers continue to spread incorrect statements about attorney L. Londell McMillan’s relationship to the Jackson family. But today, Mr. McMillan, who is also publisher of The Source, appeared on NBC’s The Today Show to present the facts concerning his involvement in the case as well as to set the record straight about what’s really happening.
Watch it below:
Having vigorously represented Michael Jackson on most of his major legal matters for the past four years (and prior to AEG), McMillan has championed Jackson’s rights on cases that stem from protecting Jackson’s assets to the refinancing of Jackson’s loans. In fact, the first case in which McMillan served Jackson—and Katherine Jackson who is both a co-manager of MJ-ATV Publishing, Michael Jackson’s entity that holds most of Michael’s interests outside of his own works and co-trustee of MJ Publishing Trust, the trust that holds all of Michael Jackson’s copyrights in addition to a few others— was a $50 million matter, that had he lost, Michael Jackson too, would have lost his share in The Beatles catalog.
In 2008, McMillan extricated Michael from a combined-rights type of 360° agreement with the Prince of Bahrain, this feat, permitted Michael to enter into an agreement with AEG for his London-based “This is It Tour.” McMillan also represented Michael Jackson in other cases and negotiated the 25th Anniversary of Thriller (check the credits). He manned the last refinancing of MJ’s loans, which amounted to about $300 million. And at the time of Jackson’s untimely death, McMillan was actively fighting another case on Jackson’s behalf in Washington D.C. Federal Court.
Over the years, L. Londell McMillan has been truly instrumental in defending the rights and helping to build the businesses of many artists, like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Spike Lee, Prince, the estate of the Notorious B.I.G. and many major Hip-Hop stars from LL Cool J and Lil Kim to Mos Def and Estelle, who actively sought out his help and expertise. As a protégé of the late, great attorney Johnnie Cochran and as one of National Law Journal’s Top 50 Minority Lawyers in the country today, McMillan is the superlawyer that helped Prince liberate himself from a creatively restrictive contract with Warner Bros in less than four months back in 1997. McMillan and Prince would later make music industry history with multi-delivery music deals, online commerce and selling tickets at tours. He was the powerhouse behind Hungarian superstar Linda Kiraly, who he also helped to extricate from a recording agreement. And this Michael Jackson case is no different.
One year at McMillan’s Artist Empowerment Coalition brunch, Kanye West, who McMillan successfully represented to allow him to become a superstar, performed as an artist for the first time in his career at the event and said, “I really appreciate Londell McMillan for everything he does for artists, artist empowerment.”
In an interview by Spike Lee, Prince said about L. Londell McMillan, his attorney for more than a decade now: “I really felt like a product, and then I started turning in work that reflected that. I had no problem with people saying I was repeating myself. I knew where I was headed and just needed direction. Once I got direction, I looked up and L. Londell McMillan was there.” He continued, “He also has a reverence for life. He seems to be a righteous soul and is focused as to what he is on earth for…”.
Even now, as a major partner in an international law firm, Dewey LeBoeuf, McMillan remains a devoted advocate for the empowerment of artists. What about the times when artists were not getting their fair share for their publishing? McMillan helped stop all that. Through his Artist Empowerment Coalition, an organization he launched to service artists who have been creatively and financially abused by unfair contracts, and as the General Counsel of NAACP’s Brooklyn chapter, McMillan is clearly a major supporter and defender of the people, especially those who have been unfairly wronged. He is not some newjack just looking for “an in.”
Simply said, this case is about money, power and respect. There is no other attorney better trained and equipped with the skill-sets, legal team, relationships and the know-how to serve the Jacksons as they face one of the biggest battles of their lives, than L. Londell McMillan. McMillan has already proved that he only has a vested interest in trying to ensure the legacy and preserve and grow the assets of Michael Jackson as he would have liked. And that is why Katherine Jackson, whom he has already represented in the past, personally appointed him to the current case.
Outnumbered by lawyers 3 to 1 in this multi-billion dollar estate case, McMillan will not rest until he sees to it that the Jackson children and family benefits the most in this case. One of his chief goals is to set a system of accountability and check-up on anyone serving as an administrator, to ensure that the family’s assets are fully protected. In addition to Mrs. Jackson, the artist community, MJ fans and others are counting on McMillan to make sure there is the type of accountability this great estate deserves and Mrs. Jackson wants to insure for her son.
