Michael Jackson Storms Back Onto Charts
The King of Pop posthumously reclaimed his crown at the top of the charts in record breaking fashion.
Michael Jackson set a record with this being the first time a cataloged title to sell more than a current release in a week, and he did it three times. Thriller, The Essential Michael Jackson, and Number Ones each sold over 100,000 copies putting them in the top three spots for this week. It should also be noted that sales week ended on June 28th and Michael had passed on June 25th, with the sales spiking in a three-day period. Number Ones sold the most this week with 108,000 copies followed by Essential with 102,000 and Thriller with 101,000.
Jackson also set a record with eight out of the top 10 top pop catalog albums, while a Jackson 5 compilation also finds its way into the upper tier. His classic 1979 studio set “Off the Wall” re-enters at No. 4 with 33,000 while his 1987 album “Bad” returns at No. 6 with 17,000. At No. 5, the Jackson 5’s “The Ultimate Collection” debuts with 18,000. Jackson’s fourth studio album for Epic Records, 1991’s “Dangerous,” re-enters at No. 7 with 14,000 while his 2001 compilation “Greatest Hits: HIStory Volume 1″ also comes back to the list at No. 8 with 12,000. Finally, Jackson’s 2004 box set “The Ultimate Collection” charts its first week on the Pop Catalog chart, arriving at No. 9 with 11,000.
