Kelis Takes Nas To The Cleaners

Associated Press -

LOS ANGELES – A judge has ordered Nas to pay Kelis nearly $40,000 in monthly support for the near future, a day after the “Milkshake” singer gave birth to the divorcing couple’s baby boy.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Louis Meisinger issued the order at a Thursday hearing. Neither Nas, whose full name is Nasir Jones, nor Kelis, whose full name is Kelis Rogers, attended Thursday’s hearing.

Rogers will receive $30,471 in spousal support per month; the couple’s son will receive $9,027, according to the court records.

Rogers gave birth to the boy, named Knight, at a New York hospital Wednesday. The 29-year-old filed for divorce from the rapper in April. The couple was married in July 2003.

The two have been sparring over support payments for several months, with Rogers contending that Jones hasn’t paid many of the costs of her pregnancy and her expenses. His attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told the judge that the rapper has paid $30,000 in expenses and the former couple’s health insurance has been maintained.

A hearing on whether the payments should be altered will be heard on Sept. 8.

Kaplan proposed paying Rogers a one-time payment of $20,000 until the judge could settle on an appropriate spousal and child support amount at a later hearing.

Meisinger rejected that offer, saying more money per month would be needed to accommodate Rogers’ lifestyle and was warranted based on income declarations filed with the court.

Meisinger told Rogers’ attorney, Laura Wasser, that the singer has 30 days to decide whether to return to the couple’s Los Angeles home. Jones is paying to maintain the property in the meantime.

The judge also ordered Jones to pay $45,000 to pay Rogers’ attorney fees and for a forensic accountant.

Wasser said Kelis is trying to secure a new record deal and hopes to begin recording new music soon. She said Rogers’ income has dipped in recent months.

She went into labor on Monday, and delivered Knight Jones on Wednesday evening around 9 p.m., according to Rogers’ publicist, Tracy Nguyen. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

Kaplan said Jones arrived at the hospital about five minutes before his son was born. Nguyen said Rogers’ mother and sister were in the hospital room for the birth.

“The beautiful baby boy and his mother are doing wonderful,” Nguyen said in a statement.

She is a gold digger and her music will not sell, the only whorish song she came out with was milk shake. I always thought her music was corny. and thats an old a@@ saying. its like she is trying to make a style or fashion statement and just cant. she is like Kelly Rowland. there music sucks. Nas next time you see someone that act all high class leave that trash right where you found it in the garbage. everyone dont buy her music. I dont eve have to say that. her music will never be #1. she is TRASH trying to be like Beyonce class. Beyonce is CLASS and gets her own. Kellis is TRASH.

Does it $40,000 to maintain a baby per month? What car toy will this baby be driving around the house, a Ferrari? It’s official, divorces have now been pimped. Pimp My Divorce. I think Kelis is just getting back at Nas. She’s talented and can make that money on her own.

1. Everyone knows that child support and alimony is based on how much someone makes. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for any woman who will be taking on a majority of the child rearing responsibilities to be compensated similarly to how she would have been if they had stayed together. That doesn’t make her a gold digger to look out for the well being of her child and to insist that Nas contributes his fair share based on their standard of living.
2. It’s also not unreasonable for Kelis to decide that when she endures one of the most physically grueling activities of a woman’s life, labor, that she wants people around her who make her feel safe. The Daily News has reported previously that Nas has been physically abusive to Kelis. And it’s a widely known fact the leading cause of death for pregnant women is homicide–committed by their partners. We need to be more supportive of Black women.

Let’s give sisters more credit. Do you know how many black women are raising children, financially and emotionally, all by themselves? And when a woman insists on her fair share based on her ex-husband’s income she’s a gold digger? We have got to be more supportive of our women. And I am dissapointed in The Source for describing a woman advocating for herself as taking A Brother to “The Cleaners.” Think of what the black community would be like if every father was financially and emotionally involved in the lives of their children.
