Did Hova Shut Down Brown?

Those of you were hoping for Chris Brown to return to the spotlight by tearing up the stage in honor of Michael Jackson, might have been dissapointed by not seeing him take the stage at last night’s BET Awards. Rumors are flying that Chris Brown was confirmed to put on a tribute for the late icon on Friday. Brown had even rehearsed for three days in L.A. for the show, however, once Jay-Z caught wind of this, he flexed some of his muscles, threatening not to take the stage if Brown had. BET obviously obliged and had Brown cut the morning of the awards show. This could have been the reason for so many Ne-Yo/Jamie Foxx performances. Despite the controversy surrounding Brown, there aren’t many artists out there that exemplify the dance aspect of Michael Jackson’s career like the Virginia native.
If you were an executive at BET, would you have let Brown take the stage?

The BET Awards highly disappointed me. Not only was it a hot mess, but they decided to cut Chris Brown off at the last minute.

Please sign petition for him to perform a tribute to MJ at the VMAs 2009.

If i was an executive i would have took the tribute to Micheal Jackson over Jay z. There isn’t anyone in the industry to me personally that could have done it as Chris would have. The fact that most people did not even know Jay-z was performing or the fact that most did not care should have been a determining factor. If a survey was taking on whether Chris or Jay-z should perform, I’m sure that Chris may have outweighed Jay. Though it would have resurrected his career, I am perfectly shore that Chris did not care about that as much as doing the tribute to MJ at the time…..Hov get over yourself, this was a tribute to icon and that was just selfish, i dont even recall him saying RIP to MJ….BET should be ashamed!!!!

yes i would have let chris go on, i respect jay z to the fullest but i believe that chris is the epitome of a michael jackson fan. jay was wrong for taking the young mike jacksons spot from him.

I would had preferred to see Chris Brown do a tribute to Michael Jackson rather to see Jay-Z perform D.O.A! Bet Awards disappointed me alot this year, I enjoyed renditions of Michael Jackson’s songs but to see someone actually perform similar to him that actually idolized him would had been better! It would have been something considerion u only seen 10 second clips of his career in between time and Jay-Z song actually didn’t have anything to do with MJ at all! they could have done better! C’mon everyone make mistakes let the boy go on with his life…he has career too! I think his should-have-been tribute to The “Great” Michael jackson should had been an exception. I’m not speaking as a fan of Chris Brown but as a bigger fan of Michael Jackson! I know Michael is looking down and shaking his head at us as a black community. Somehow its another time we’re not sticking together and forgivin and forgetting! Michael Jackson was all about goodness in the world and see no one can do anything good or say anything good to celebrate this Black man life and legacy!

Chris brown would have entertained me.. i loved Jammie and NeYo’s performance, i would have love to see ChrisBrown’s Tribute on stage… why is JayZ trying to stiffle his carrer.. the show was sloppy… the highlight of the show was when Janet came on thats it…

Granted Chris Brown messed up in the worse way but banning him from paying tribute to one of his icons? Its not like it would have been a redemptive performance. No one will let Chris Brown forget what he did, there will be jokes and reminders for years to come. He is the new “Bobby Brown/Ike Turner joke.” But despite all of that he was going pay his respects to Michael Jackson the way he knows how. The night was about Michael, not Hova.

If you were doing a tribute to Michael Jackson, then Chris tribute should have been hears not more of Jay Z whining. The show was crap anyway so Chris is better not having participated on it.

i would have loved to see chris brown. there are alot of artists that make mistakes and we stiill support them no matter what the case. He got his sentence now its time to move on. He would’ve killed the performance. jay shouldn’t have did that to chris. EVERYONE wanted to see CB pay tribute, it sucks that he single handedly ruined that for millions.

Jun 29, 2009 17:17

[...] The Source has confirmed that Jay-Z threatened to cancel his performance at last night’s BET Awards if Chris Brown was allowed to perform his scheduled tribute to Michael Jackson. Though Brown had rehearsed for the show three days in advance, Jay-Z used his considerable influence to shut him down, most likely as a form of revenge against the singer, who has been charged with domestic abuse against Rihanna. As a result of this last-minute decision, Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx were forced to play extra songs to fill up time in the broadcast. [Source] [...]

I for one have to hand it to Jay for sending a powerful message that no matter HOW talented you are, you don’t get a free pass for acting like an animal. Don’t you think Rihanna would have enjoyed going to the Grammys … but oh wait she was in the hospital with a busted face. He hasnt even apologized for it!!! If he even admitted that it was wrong that would be something but instead he’s acting like it isnt a big deal.

I don’t think someone as amazing as Michael Jackson needs a tribute from a female bashing two-bit thug, even if he can dance. I am sure there are plenty of kids waiting in the wings who I would rather see take Chris place.

If i was an exec. Chris would’ve performed and Jay Z would’ve been sent on his merry way and the WORLD would know about his conversation with me and Jay and him putting himself above MJ! Im a fan of Jay but if this is true im disgusted! He has NO right to dent CB the opportunity of performing a tribute to his idol! Jay Z shame on you. Clearly Jay has NEVER done anything wrong in his life, because being a drug dealer is a legal way to make money! Bee kick him out, move on to the next!

I guarantee you Chris Brown is NOT the only one who has hit someone. We don’t know all the facts to this incident. If the Jackson Family requested for him to perform which is what I heard, it was not JayZ/Beyonce that he would have been showing honor for it was Michael Jackson. I really hate how some people walk around and act like they have NEVER did anything wrong in their life. OK he hit Rhianna, but what about JayZ’s past —past drug dealer and God knows what else, those WITHOUT sin cast the first stone. It kills me how people try to be someones God, judge and jury. BET had high/drunk/convicted felons/and ex-murderers on stage and he was worried about Chris Brown. He was worried because he knew that would have been a come back for Chris - and he and Beyonce’s performance was WHACK!!! So, some much for them threathening to cancel out i wish they had.

I don’t know that Jay-Z should have been the one to shut down Chris Brown’s performance but I am glad someone did shut it down.

Like someone else stated, maybe Rihanna wanted to attend the Grammy’s but was unable to do so because CB beat the sh*t out of her. That Pussy Brown feels so tough hitting a woman but upset becasue he couldn’t pay tribute to his Idol Michael Jackson.

Just be glad that Jay-Z only banned you from an awards show you loser!

Jun 29, 2009 20:55

Thank you so much Arlington for speaksing the truth! Has anyone else remembered how BAD Jay Z was??? Jay Z CHEATED ON MANY women which is sinful and hurtful emotionally just like domestic violence to a woman, he did many drugs, got drunk, dropped Teairra Mari but went on forward with Rihanna, he also dropped one white female because she wouldn’t pretend to be a dike… don’t even ge me started. This man has done so much wrong in his life and he’s worries about Chris Brown just because he hit Rihanna. Jay, get over yourself. Maybe that’s why Rihanna didn’t show like everyone thought she would… because Jay-Z made Chris Brown not perform. This wasn’t about Jay-Z… it was about the GREAT Michael Jackson who also made HUGE mistakes in his life as well! Nobody is perfect and Chris has owned up to his mistakes and both he and Rihanna are moving on with their life. Everyone has committed sins and made mistakes so I don’t know why people think that if you make a sin like doing drugs or something, it’s not as bad as domestic violence. Even in the bible it says that we cannot judge one another only GOD can judge so who are you to decide what’s bad and what’s not? Anyway the BET awards were so wack and needed an upbeat performance by someone so talented like Chris!

D
Jun 29, 2009 21:06

I say that is GREAT WHAT JAY-Z DID. Sadly but too many times the media and society forgives celebrities for reckless behavior and violent acts like domestic violence, which society and the rap world does not take take seriously . Michael Jackson was a man of peace! He was against violence that he witnessed throughout his life towards his siblings and his mother. Therefore why should BET have Chris Brown performed when he represents the EXACT OPPOSITE of Michael Jackson life, a man of peace! Jay-Z was taking a stand first as a man stating this is wrong, we should not support abusive behavior towards females, And then secondly, as a rap icon, he realizes that SOME (not all) rap music condemns women and supports violence towards them. Some people are quick to criticize, but I think people would benefit if they took the time to think about the bigger picture and think about the message it is saying directly and indirectly to people and children.

Diane
Jun 29, 2009 21:43

Yes, I would have let Chris perform because this was a tribute to the KING of Pop, and no one exemplifies Michael’s dance like Chris Brown. Althought I strongly disagree with any man hitting a woman or vice versa, the night was about honoring Micheal’s memory and his legacy was not honored to the fullest.

As they say let he who is without sin cast the first stone, it is not our place to judge Chris Brown, there is a higher being for that.

Jun 29, 2009 23:25

Its funny that the people lashing out at Chris arent complaining about Beyonce! Did we forget that the media whore TRASHED the Jackson family a few months ago and now is wanting to do a fake ass tribute to Michael? Anything to get some free press. Its sick and sad that they shut out a true fan and friend of Michael, so that a washed up Jay Z and his hypocrite of a wife could have some airtime! WTF did DOA have to do with Michael? And how sweet to do a song titled with DEATH while paying “tribute” to a recently deceased man? No wonder the show sucked Jay Z needs to STFU and so does his two faced media whore / wife. Both of them failed to do anything for Michael, they just wanted to promote themselves because they knew that people would be tuning in. Eff them both, and I cant wait for karma to hit their disgusting asses full circle.

RIP MICHAEL

It is so sad that a drug dealer and ex pimp could have the nerve to have a judgement on chris brown. i heard in the blog above. The bet awards was terrible and Janet was the highlight. Chris would have brought life to the show. He is a true fan of Michael. He idolized him. Chris’s videos show how he idolized MJ. He was a true fan and should have been able to represent for a trubute to MJ. JayZ who? What was he srapping about death? OMG what respect to a great artist? Jigga your whack. The sad thing is he was messing with Rhianna and his wife is by his side. Chris I hope we will see your comeback on the VMA’s

Jun 30, 2009 0:39

Hell yeah, if Brown rehearsed for 3 days and not many can imitate like Brown. I respect Jay-z, but this is not his show or production. It does not have his name on it. No one knows who is REALLY performing until the performance comes. So if Jay-z cancelled it would have been just another artist who did not perform, just like how Brown is another artist who did not perform. Be real. BET should not let anyone run them except the people who OWN them. If Jay-z does have some rank in BET then void everything that was said in this response to the article.

It is astonishing to me that there are so many supporters of Chris Brown on this thread. He BEAT a woman to a bloody mess. And has shown no remorse. Who cares how long he rehearsed. Who cares if he can dance like Michael Jackson. Who cares how mediocre the show was. It is a matter of principle.

I think Brezzy should have been able to perform. Jay def has the pull, but he isn’t perfect. No one knows the truth behind what happened between Chris Brown and Rihanna but the 2 of them. On top of that, its none of our business. He’s an artist, and a helluva performer….the best man in the industry that can pay homage to the man that made his career possible. Chris Brown has already been sentenced so he’s paying for his mistake, so his lively hood shouldn’t be destroyed. Oh, and did yall hear that the judge during the case ordered Rihanna to stay away from him too….theirs so much more we dont know.

Are u people that ignorant? I think so. WOW- our people are headed toward destruction if we don’t think that someone who commits domestic violence should be censured. Chris Brown’s career should be permanently affected and he should not be able to make a living entertaining in my book. A little harsh but he should at least be censured for about 2-3 years. He bit the chick, repeatedly punched her in the face. But then again I guess you people think it’s ok to hurt a black woman. I’m not saying Jay Z is innocent of being faithful but very different when we’re talking about trying to kill a woman he allegedly loved. The only way to hit someone with an ego and immaturity like Chris Brown who was out jet skiing the weekend after he beat her a** is in the pocket. He’s a sociopath. Social alienation and pressure are consequences of actions that are not good for our society. I seriously think African Americans are doomed if we condone his behavior. How can we rise if we accept and laud the degenerates of society? We have to be better than that.

Why do we continue to punish people after they have done something wrong. Chris Brown grew up witnessing domestic violence in his family (interview with tyra banks), I commend him for fighting it this long. No a man should not beat up a woman, but if Jay-z used to be a pimp I guarentee you he has beaten a woman. Lest not forget the rumors of him and Rhianna cheating. Jay-z is not squeeky clean and he is not a God. We have all done things we wish we could take back. Jay-Z had no right to shut CB down from performing. The kid is paying his debt. I mean isn’t it alittle hypocritical for someone like Jay-Z to pass judgement! This is the same dude who beat down a helpless female in South Africa on camera! The same dude who sold poison to how many mothers and fathers! The same dude who was on trial for stabbing “Un”! I mean if you are going to be a G be a G and help this dude instead of trying to kill his career. I rrespect his music and his grind to get to where he is at but someone gave him a chance to be where he is at, despite all his transgressions.

I don’t care who nixed Brown - I’m just grateful someone had the good sense to do it. Paying tribute to a hero is an HONOR and a PRIVILEGE that Chris Brown has NOT earned. Its about god damn time somebody stood up for what’s right and stopped letting celebrity men get away with murder, rape, and a variety of other violations of women just because they have some talent.

I can’t believe how many dumb asses on this site are more concerned with seeing someone dance and sing for three minutes than they are with the fact that he beat the crap out of his GIRLFRIEND. He took advantage of the fact that men have bigger muscles than women to take his anger out on someone who trusted and loved him. F*&@ CB and all the others like him.

I am all for second chances and Chris Brown would have been great, but he will pay for what he did way past the sentence the judge gave him. That is just how it is so he should be prepared to work hard to get back to where he was. And to Kayy who posted previously, It is inappropriate the way you worded your comment just because other women have been beaten doesn’t mean we ignore this one and this isn’t something you LOL. You should think of those out there who suffer because I feel bad for them and maybe that is just me

P.S.
I understand where Jay Z was coming from, not only was Rhianna a friend but she is under his label so he is just sticking up for her. I don’t like or support what Chris Brown did but who am i to say he doesnt deserve any kind of music career, I personally will have to see more than an apology to become a fan again because I am sick of how the entertainers are making us as a black community look. How about making a song about something other than women, money, swag, and materialistic things. Rap and R&B use to be better lets get it back on track.

It’s about time an African-American man took a public stand against Chris Brown. Brown is an abuser of black women, and an enemy of black people. We haven’t forgotten the photo’s of Rhianna, or the brutal police transcript. It’s too soon for him to be representin’ in any way, and I’m surprised that Jay Z had to flex-BET should’ve known better. Men who brutalize women should be excluded from all community activities until they heal. Celebrities need to be held accountable for their actions.

Jay is truly, “post-nigga” and I applaud his courage and integrity.
