Dilla’s Beginnings

Dillanthology Vol. 1 is the first in a series of upcoming releases that will showcase J. Dilla’s earlier productions in the rap game. Many will recognize a number of these memorable records and others will question their Hip-Hop knowledge saying to themselves, “Wow, I remember this joint, he really produced this?”

Dillanthology’s tracklist was carefully chosen to showcase Dilla’s diverse production style.

Common’s “The Light” and De La Soul’s “Stakes is High” are included, as is the jazzy Roots track “Dynamite” and the alluring instrumental of “Didn’t Cha Know” by Erykah Badu.

Dilla’s talent for blending unorthodox and chopped sound effects are best displayed with his work on the Pharcyde’s “Drop” and the A.G. cult-classic “Hip Hop Quotable”. The bombastic drums and mellow strings on Slum Village’s “Fall In Love” produce a soothing atmosphere for attracting rhymes and a laid-back rhythm; which describes Vol. 1 in its entirety.

James “J Dilla” Yancey was one of Hip-Hop’s most admired producers. His production catalog has become legendary within the underground and independent circuit. After his untimely death in February 2006, word of mouth through his Hip-Hop peers solidified him as one of the greats, at the top of the class with the likes of DJ Premier, Dr. Dre and Pete Rock.

Every producer has praised Dilla for his in-studio talents and unique style of production. Dillanthology accomplishes its goal in creating a starting point for a number of anticipating releases that the Hip-Hop market should keep their eyes open for. By: Alex Bracetti
