“This Is The Worst Music’s Ever Been” - Scarface

Scarface is known for speaking his mind on and off wax. As Hip-Hop’s ‘Uncle Face,’ his made is personal mission to lace youngsters with the game. We recently caught-up with him to get some clarifications on his comments about white boys in Hip-Hop and his thoughts on who’s really running the south.
The Source: In a recent interview, you said “How can they let a gang of white boys determine what’s hot?” What did you mean by that?
Scarface: I mean if you look at all the hands of the labels men, the label hands, I’m talking about the kings of the kings of the kings, the people that’s over Black music man, over the rap Hip-Hop over you know, that they fuckin’, they not Black.
Source: Why you think no one said it before?
Scarface: You may have a few house niggas here and there, but it ain’t no niggas in place to really pull the trigger. They have to go see the white boy. The white boy gotta figure everything, what’s hot and what’s not to say what’s hot and what not. But my thing is how the fuck can they determine what’s hot and what’s not when he wasn’t a part of making that shit happen in the first place? Man Hip-Hop is so fucking hood, I guess the power that be feel like you know it’s the little white kid that’s buying it so…
Source: Do you think that’s a fair sentiment for them to say at all at this point - now that Hip-Hop universal?
Scarface: I know when Hip-Hop started and I know where it’s at right now. I think that when it was the raw element, and it was quality, you know and not quantity it was a little easier to digest. But like right now, that shit is terrible! Seriously I promise you man, it’s a conspiracy by the powers that be. The man destroying fucking Black music dude. I promise you. Because why else would somebody let this bullshit get on TV and on these radio waves, man? I mean this is the worst music’s ever been.
I’m talking about you listening to when music was really really great in the 70’s and 80’s and the 90’s. Look at music now. I’m just saying music in general - fuck Hip-Hop. I’m just saying music.
The Source: So let me ask you this, how do we take control back? Can we take control back at this point?
Scarface: I mean I think as God has the money and I say God in a very disrespectful way, but as long as they got the money, shit, they gon’ always have control, you know? - ‘They’ meaning the powers that be in the music industry.
Niggas aint strong enough to get together. I tell you what, if niggas got together and started to try to run a record label, a major record label, it’s falling cause niggas can’t stick together long enough to piece and blossom everybody in for the pay. You know? So I mean I ain’t mad at nobody. I just want people to know what’s really happening.
Source: Londell (co-owner of The Source, has worked as Scarface’s lawyer) said you used to tell him to calm down and don’t hurt ‘em.
Scarface: I understand where he is, you know I understand where he is, fuck that shit. They control 98% of the mortgage, you know. They control 98% of our music man. Our only Black Entertainment Television is white entertainment television because it ain’t owned by niggas no more.
Source: Londell also said to ask you about Def Jam South – and you not getting credit for it now.
Scarface: Oh they not giving me credit for it? Well shit, Londell knows the truth. Londell was there. Shit -followed me the whole way. I mean I don’t want credit for it, take that shit. I don’t even want credit for it. But we all know what’s happening. I ain’t worried. I don’t stress. I’m in good shape.
Source: Let’s talk about something that happened a while ago. A lot of people have their opinions on that.
Scarface: I mean if he feels like he deserves it, I don’t give a fuck. You know? TI feels like he deserves that title just like Ali. Let him have it motherfucker.
Source: (Laughs) Like Ali huh?
Scarface: Yup. But I will say this. Lets just say I’m the realest nigga down south. I’m the realest in the south. He could be the king. Yeah I love TI. Let him be the king. But I’m the realest, nigga, down, south.
Source: Period.
Scarface: Period.

I agree with all that shit. The industry got this wack ass shit out there.
Fuckin got rappers dressin like abercrombie models.
FUCK ASSER ROTH WANABEE ASS EMINEM. GIVING THE HONKEYS AT THESE LABELS WHAT THEY WANT
The complete assimilation/whitewashed takeover of Rap music
WHY DO WHITE PEOPLE DEDICATE THEIR LIFE TO STEALING FROM BLACK CULTURE, TRY TO MAKE IT THEIR OWN?! THEN CONVINCE OTHER WHITE PEOPLE IT WAS THEIRS TO BEGIN WITH?!
ONE GREAT EXAMPLE IS THE FACT THAT THE NOT ONLY WAS ROCK AND ROLL INVENTED BY A BLACK MAN (CHUCK BERRY) BUT SO WAS THE FOUNDATION FOR THE TRADITIONAL HEAVY METAL GUITAR SOLO (JIMI HENDRIX)
Face is right on so many levels….. We the people Black people gave birth to hip hop… So how can a generic white guy tell me whats hot……
One of the problems are that not enough niggaz are educated enough. Another problem is that if a nigga is educated enough to assume executive level positions, he most likely won’t look to be a music exec; more like an entry-level marketing manager, a PR associate, or an A&R. As for those few white guys dubbed, “Powers that be”; though they may not have a love for the music, they definately have the ambition to manipulate it, and the drive to insert themselves in power positions, not runner positions. They own the block, they aren’t the hustlers tryin to get on it.
Platinum B, da 1st blind rapper aka Makaveli93
White peple hav no rhythm and datz y dey hav rock music….LOL…dey jus want 2 take over hip hop and MESS it up…..we NEED REEL HIP HOP BACK…HIP HOP isnt da same like it wuz when it started in 1979…it started out so simple and now look wut we got n hip hop 2day….it jus aint da same as it wuz even n da 90’s…i REELY HOPE HIP HOP gets better and turns around n 09….
Harlem Princess
I aggree with Lan. The problem is niggaz not being educated enough. Lack of knowledge about the music business can render us powerless in the hip hop culture. Some labels don’t allow artist to have creative control over their music which is another factor for the bad music on our airwaves now.
[...] The Source - “This Is The Worst Music’s Ever Been” - Scarface Follow up interview by the source asking him about thoes comments^. His lost it.. [...]
scarface is on some “boo hoo, look at me all washed up, i’m gonna blame the white boy” shit. the game’s so tainted with bullshit that the only real artists are underground. aside from ludacris, common, and nas, every real emcee in the mainstream has either said “fuck this” or moved to the back burner.
the real issue, for those still passionate about hip hop music and culture, isn’t whose running the business side of the industry, but the fact that ignorant fuckers like scarface are debating stupid titles and blaming the downfall of hiphop, or whatever the fuck he’s unhappy about, on “white boys.”
and what the fuck is he talking about when he says,
“Niggas aint strong enough to get together. I tell you what, if niggas got together and started to try to run a record label, a major record label, it’s falling cause niggas can’t stick together long enough to piece and blossom everybody in for the pay” ?
look at all the successful lack artists who have more than enough money and power to start and run their own labels: nas, puff daddy, ludacris, common, talib kweli, etc.
so stop making all these bullshit excuses. in the underground, there are hundreds of black, white, and even asian, males and females who would easilyput 90% of these professional rappers to shame.
This guy is a complete fucking moron. First of all, hip-hop doesn’t belong to black people so where the fuck does he get off thinking he has the right to be racist in that respect just because he’s fucking black. It may come from a black origin but so what, think of all the things that come from a white origin, that’s like people saying ‘black people can’t do rock music, it’s a white medium’. Can you imagine someone saying that to Jimmy Hendrix, would be fucking uproar. I’m sick of this positive discrimination and now the US have a black president, black people have no fucking excuse for it.
A music genre doesn’t belong to fucking anybody. Music is an art medium. Art is man-made beauty, crafted stylistic in one form or another and that’s more than skin deep. Also, this nonsense about a conspiracy to destroy black music… Lmao. That’s got to be one of the most moronic things I’ve heard in a while, some idiots really think it all up.
Fuck Scarface the racist piece of shit. Need the cunt forget as well that Eminem is one of the best rappers ever, The Marshall Mathers LP shits on every so called lyricist to ever pick up a mic and Relapse will crush all this nonsensical cheese-hop out at the moment.
Also the problem is obvious. Hip-hop has always been seen as a perfect ‘fad’ vehicle for the money hungry bastards who try to exploit it. Nothing to do with ‘white boys’ deciding whats fucking hot. It’s black, white, asian, male, female, whatever people exploiting hip-hop and using it as a tool to make cash. Many modern hip-hop artists who have full fucking control over their music can be ashamed of that fact. So stop all this childish, positive discrimination bullshit and look at the real issues.
The only way rap will change is for a real lyricist to produce a groundbreaking album to raise new standards such as; Illmatic, Marshall Mathers LP etc.
And Eminem’s Relapse is coming 09′ and he’s been working on it a long long time. It’s going to be the rap game’s new Illmatic!
I think it doesnt matter what race makes supperior rap look at Souja Bitch and Eminem souja boys songs can’t compare to Ems I think it all has to do with who notices who look at paul wall he’s the man but how many white rappers does he rap with Scarface is the best southern rapper but he maybe out of place and I’m not just saying all this because i’m white I’m saying this because i know hip-hop I think rappers like lil wayne ruin it trying to spit all fucked up sounding like shit on his mixtapes I say it is whack rappers like plies and Souja boy

Face at least admits, to a degree, that black folk are partially to blame for what he’s complaining about.
- “cause niggas can’t stick together long enough to piece and blossom everybody in for the pay.” -
That sounds like a personal problem. I suppose that’s whitey’s fault too though, right? Why be responsible for your own faults when you can just blame them on somebody else? That way the problems never get addressed, things never change, and you always have something to complain about! Awesome!!!
Pop music sucks, but it’s pop because that’s what the majority of people want to hear. They don’t want to hear turntables and lyrical skill. They want flashes and synths and auto-tune robots on simple rhyme schemes talkin about rims and grills.
To fix music, all music, people need to get better, all people.
Nick,
You said “that’s like people saying ‘black people can’t do rock music, it’s a white medium’.” You’ve got to be kidding me. Never heard of Bo Diddly or Chuck Berry? Get Mos Def’s track called Rock n Roll, or a book on rock history. Check out Lead Belly. Start there.

Scarface has a right to his opinion as to why he feels the Music Business is in it’s worst state ever. I think what you will find is a lot of people cannot deal with the shift in the industry. Music really is not controlled by the corporations anymore it has truly filtered down to the independent artists and the fans. The music buying public has and is continually determining what is relevant in music.
This does not mean that Scarface is not relevant however, now artists like Scarface have to make albums/music that is GREAT not just Good. And this fact does not only affect Scarface it also affects artists like Eminem, Kanye West, Dr. Dre, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and etc.
There are so many artists out there but how many are truly GREAT? Who and where is the next Public Enemy?, Slick Rick?, Tupac?, or Biggie? Consumers will ALWAYS buy music that is ” pushed by the Corporations” because it is a conditioning of the mind. However, the public knows when something is GREAT and will embrace it when it raises its head either on the Internet or Myspace.
The challenge is to make GREAT music like Public Enemy, Slick Rick, Souls of Mischief, Scarface/Geto Boys, and many others. This is not a race thing this is a GREAT music thing.

Fuck Scarface, what a racist moron, no one owns a genre of music, and as for the “man” get the fuck on. i’m white i don’t dictate what’s hot on the radio i can’t control shit… oh yea a black man is holding our highest office he is the man get on point. underground rappers have creative control and they put out some dope shit, black and white artists and this “man” doesn’t stop them.
And as far music dying, no shit make better stuff when did it become the money over the message ? how many artists have put out album where when it’s over you say that whole thing was good, and it’s not just hip-hop it’s universal, all music sucks nowadays and Scarface ain’t done shit since The Fix.
I always though bushwick was better
TheGhost, completely agree with you. Exactly same mind frame as me. Of course no genre belongs to any fucking race. The ironic thing is - idiots like Scarface forget that by saying things like he does he’s actually being racist as well, the pendulum swings both ways.
There’s a lot of positive racism in America. A lot of people don’t really understand racism so they’re extreme; They’re either white and extremely uptight and touchy and apologetic about it all or they’re black and are bitter and pretend to be ‘hurt’ and ‘offended’ at everything, it’s ridiculous.
It’s like when Obama won, you had black Americans openly stating that they voted for Obama JUST because he was black. They had no idea about the politics they just voted for him because he was black and America hadn’t had a black President up until that point. The fucked up thing is - They were saying it as if they were proud of it and people were applauding them! That is fucking racist! Can you imagine the other way around - People saying ‘YEAH, we vote for McAin cuz’ he’s white!’ would be fucking outrage. If colour REALLY doesn’t matter then why does it matter that Obama is black in a good OR bad way? It should be100% irrelevant. By pointing it out, that’s being racist. I’m glad Obama did win because he was CLEARLY the better man. He’s intelligent, articulate and reasonable. Just what the US needs but can you imagine if he had been a complete idiot like Bush but had won just because America wanted a black President? It’s madness.
Modern black Americans didn’t go through slavery, it was abolished hundreds of years ago so I just cannot understand why some of them think they have a right to say the word nigga and white people don’t. If the WORD is offensive then NOBODY should be able to say it, if it offends society that much. Why should black people who do get offended by it have to listen to it from black people who think it’s fine? Why should white people who get offended by it, have to hear it for the same reason? Personally I don’t get offended by it, it’s just a word, I’m white btw but that’s irrelevant. Point is, by giving black people some wierd unspoken privalage of being able to use it just because they have black skin… THAT is positive discrimination, racism at it’s purest.
Point is, skin colour means fuck all and very very few people are racist. I’m sure there is a small part of the population on this planet who HATE black people and a small population who genuinely HATE white people, and Asian and so on… Fact is, you will never abolish it completely. As long as the concept exists then some will inherit it. BUT, all this fucking blabbing on by black rappers and some other fools like Jesse Jackson, these fucking Martin Luther King wannabe’s who’ve seen too many movies and 60’s clips and pretend to be in some sort of struggle against the ‘man’ and the ‘white folks’ fucking pisses me off. Grow up ffs, nobody gives a shit about skin colour these days.
Scarface is an idiot, at a man of his age, in this day and age - he really can’t afford to be so grossely misinformed and naieve.
Reggie Redcheeks
WTF????!!!!! how come every white person has to grouped together because of their skin pigment. every time somebody gets mad or jealous its, “oh the white man fuckin it up……the white man…..the white man” its just fuckin comical. didnt everyone wanna be treated equal? lol by the way, one of the greatest hip hop artist of all time is white. noticed i said ONE of the greatest. so dont fuckin trip and say the white man always says that. now let the hate start. i am dying to see how people respond to this. ha ha ha ha ha
I’m out, Reggie Noble, wait , i mean as i am classified—-the white man (what a fuckin joke)
Reggie Redcheeks
by the way, Scarface is a legend but should act his age. Like TI says, “in order to understand my train of thought, u have to live the life i lived. if u dont understand that then u dont understand english”
Nick…There’s no such thing as positive discrimination. There’s so much in your writing that is wrong it’ll take a 1 hour show to tell you.
harlemprincess
It would be helpful if Face named some of the White people he is referring who are in high positions on record labels.
It hard to be optimistic when no one out there is rapping over these Tracks:

If they did the industry game would be saved!
TheGhost
i agree with nick using the N word as a one up over whites is the same as whites saying it to the slaves back in the 1800’s. look if i were enslaved i would never use a word meant to keep my people down in order to show so called equality. and whoever dissed on Asher Roth the man who found him as brought us the Wu-Tang, Big Pun, and Mobb Deep so good job. And before this goes any further white youth are the major consumer of hip hop records so a lot of rappers owe their careers to to Scarface’s white devil.
TheWhiteDevil
Scarface is a complete idiot. How is he gonna say that the “white man” doesn’t know whats hot. I’m white and loved face’s shit back in day. “I Never Seen A Man Cry” and “My Block” are some pretty fucking hot tracks. I agree that the shit they play on the radio is fucking dumb but the last time I checked its getting played by black DJ’s on radio stations that are targeted to a black audience. Stop doing the stanky leg and get your shit on point. If Jay-Z can be president of one of the largest record companies in the world, why the fuck can’t any other black person? Maybe face is just mad because after he left the Geto Boys his music has been dirty as shit. Gotta have somebody to blame it on, why not the white man. Fuck that shit. TheGhost is right..Bush mother fucking wick mother fucking Bill is better anyways
Christopher
Its like this, if u look at music from 2001 and look how much it has change since then, i mean theres some good music still being made, but bottom line take it from another real nigga yall, just like the whole spokesman of the south say, SHITS FUCKED UP, and i mean i completly agree what hes saying because its been goin on for years, and for yall who disagree, yall dumb as hell to disagree with that, yall too money ridden to see that shit, i mean look at some of the styles, the mohawk, thats worse than the jerrycurl, i mean people listen to the realist nigga when he’s sayin what he’s saying, its all true shit, and to those who disagree, this aint for u, so SHUT THE FUCK UP
Reggie Redcheeks
ha ha ha. from chino? please u must not be a hip hop lover. i understand why scarface says what he does. he is just jealous. i agree that hip hop sux right now. the one hot album this year was TI’s and thats it. bottom line, radios killed hip hop. play the same 10 songs over and over. and most hip hop stations play whats requested. and who makes requests? the fans. if there wasnt a thing called “singles” we wouldnt be here with this argument. tracks that r not singles are hotter. thats real talk. but if every rapper hates the music out then do something about it. quit crying and do something. i am getting tired of hearing legends say hip hop is dead, or hip hop sux. if i was am emcee i would do something about it. so uncle face do something. u talented. nas, do something. wu tang, do something. and everyone else. money and hoes is an old subject. if i were making big calls i wouldnt let that shit out either. be creative. i wanna hear some old school outkast. some rakim. some early eminem. some wu chronicles, some clipse, some obie trice, some goodie mobb, some old school kurupt. just shut up all u unmotivated emcees and do something about it.
Ok I think Scarface is a good artist and he knows how to hold it down but he went way too far when talkin about it has somethin to do with white people. I am sooo sick of people always using that as an excuse like it really matters with the color of someone skin . It has more to do with their character . There is dumba**es in every race. Eminem can hold it down he is a great ”white rapper’ and Paul Wall and cant forget about Lil Whyte. These are all great rappers and they arent even tryin to get over the black rapper they wanna work together. It gets sooo ridiculous that it constantly has to be a race thing .Why cant anyone see this as a good thing . And to the people that are talking about Obama he isnt even fully black he does have a white mom .
It’s sad but it’s so true how most music out there in hip-hop is garbage. And there’s nothing wrong with the commercial stuff because truth be told, we hear some of those tracks in the club or in the car and we all get down to it…. let’s be honest. But to an extent. But 80% of hip hop right now is not even commercial. It’s just garbage. Period.
Check out http://www.myspace.com/featuremusik to see the new competition in the game.
Scarface brings up a good point. Many of the artist are busy beefing over b.s. instead of coming together. I mean there is enough money out there but like usual we as black people are so busy tearing each other down that we are cheating ourselves of owning things. Don’t let the white boys control what you are capable of owning. I mean white boys see $ they don’t see the real talent that you have. They pay you off by jewelry and cars and get you accountants they are taking a cut and who might screw you over. Be wise in the music game. Take a fianance class and take the time to learn the ins and outs of the business. Much Love and respect
