Books: How To Survive Puberty At 25

Journalist Nina Bhadreshwar’s book How to Survive Puberty at 25 is a memoir, a diary and a piece of Hip-Hop history. Nina B tells her whole story, from her childhood struggles with family and anorexia in England, to her crazy years living in a gang neighborhood in South Central, LA while she worked for Suge Knight and Death Row Records. There, she became part of the Death Row Family of artists and executives, including Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur, even corresponding with Pac (that’s a letter from him pictured) when he was in jail. Sensing that shit was about to hit the fan, Nina left Death Row in 1996, just months before Tupac’s murder.

“While I was in the USA, a lot of the gangsters and Death Row ‘inmates’ kept saying I should write about my life and what was going on,” said Nina in an interview to The Source. But after narrowly escaping with her life, she thought it best to keep silent until she started working on the book 2003.
It was worth the wait. Abstract but incredibly detailed and brutally honest, you haven’t read something like this before. “It’s not a journalistic exposé, not a kiss and tell,” said Nina. “It’s realer than that. It’s about the chaos of puberty, the magic of music and art and family.”

The title of the book sounds good. I’ll consider reading this.

I would read this book just to see what she writes about being in death row records and what was going on there, other wise the title is not very catchy to me.

Yo I love Death Row, I don’t know about snitching on what went down, but i’ll read the book. I just hope it ain’t one of those “ghetto hood books” bout girls doing wild things to make it out the hood, but it should work, hopefully

As long as she aint publicing her sexual escapades in the book like other women, then i guess it’s cool

I response to the above comment: I was still a virgin when I left Los Angeles so no - no sexual exploits and I was not born and raised in ‘the hood’. Death Row was a lot crazier, more dangerous and more fun than any of the silly media stories. I only write about what I had experience of.

Hi Nina. I look forward to reading the book….

I remember I did all the graphic design for you for Deathrow Uncut, and then right when I was gonna get paid for it all, Suge Knight went to jail, the whole thing went under and it didn’t happen. Oh well…. That’s life. Anyway I hope you are well…
