Talkin’ Gutta With Ace Hood

You’d think being hailed as the future of Hip-Hop and being the lone artist signed to DJ Khaled’s We the Best Music would have Ace Hood feeling the pressure – but, nah.

We caught up with Ace Hood, whose debut album Gutta is in stores now, while he was posted up in an Orlando hotel room between shows “eating a cheeseburger and countin’ some money.”

Check out what Ace had to say about his place in the rap game, the other career that could’ve made him a star and why his chick got locked-up for him in the “Ride” video.

The Source: Do you feel pressure to live up to the hype surrounding you?

Ace Hood: Naw, I know what I have to do. Being backed by the biggest cats in the game, I’ve had the advantage of being coached. I have my guard up. I know that in order to do certain things, I know what I gotta do and… it’s in me. I feel like I am the next best thing.

The Source: You approached Khaled when he was leaving work at the radio station and gave him your material – things seem to have taken off from there. What were you doing before that?
Ace Hood: Before that I was working a 7 to 7 job – I was working like 12 hours a day in a warehouse. I ended up leaving that alone. I built my buzz thru Dollaz And Dealz Entertainment.

In high school, people would skip class to come see me rap. When I was doing that, the respect I got was crazy, the security guards and the lunch servers would stop working to come hear me. I knew if the right person heard it, I’d be the next big thing.

Khaled came in and took me to another level. I never knew it was in me. He always felt it was, from day one. Without even knowing me, he felt like there was greatness inside of me.

The Source: What’s your favorite track on the album?

Ace Hood: My favorite I would say – we just the video for it - the record’s called “Get ‘Em Up.” It’s hard to pick, I got this crazy record with Akon on the album, too.

The Source: So, on behalf of the ladies, I have to ask you about the “Ride” video with Trey Songz. Now, the song is a love song but, at the end of the video, your girl ends up going to prison for you. What’s up with that?

Ace Hood: Basically, she took the fall, police came to look for me and they asked where I was and she played like she didn’t know. She wouldn’t give me up. It just shows that we want that female that would ride or die. She took the fall for me.

The Source: So, is that what you expect in a relationship? Does a girl need to go that far?

Ace Hood: I would like her to go far. Hold me down. As long as it’s mutual - just hold me down in any situation. When I’m out here on the road, when I’m trying to do what I’m doing.

The Source: So if you weren’t a rapper, what would you be doing?

Ace Hood: My passion was football. I was one of those cats that a family depends on to make it. I was big on the football. A lot people expected me to play college football – I thought that’s what I was gonna do, but I always loved music too.

But, I got hurt. I had to go thru rehabilitation and all that and I was beating my body up. I just lost the love. I was in practice writing rhymes in my head. And when I told people I wanted to do music, a lot of people told me I was stupid to quit ball. By: Sabrina Ford

Ace Hood… I didn’t know what to think about dude when he came out, after seeing on the BET Cipher, I was kinda impressed, but no one will stack up to Scarface.

His new album Emeritus drops December 2nd and it’s going to be hot I think. “High Powered” that shit you know and plus I heard it’s available in iTunes.

The single by Ace Hood and Trey Songz sounds pretty good. He’s one of those artist who will grow on me over time after I hear a few of his songs on the radio often.

I’m not even mad at this dude. But wonder would he ever work with Twista? Twista just dropped a new mixtape called “Who’e Got Next” on his label G.M.G. I heard it the other day and it’s kinda dope.
