My BlackBerry’s Better: Storm V. Bold

The Source’s resident tech guru CJ and intern Dewane both came to work showing off their fancy new BlackBerry devices this week.

CJ copped the new BlackBerry Storm, the first touch screen BlackBerry ever. Dewane opted for the BlackBerry Bold. Created in the likeness of previous models, the Bold has a full QWERTY keypad, plus a new larger screen, crisper picture, black leather back and ridiculously long battery life.

Instead of just listening to them argue about whose phone is better, we decided to bring the question to you. Check out our feature by feature comparison after the jump. Then take our poll.

CJ: Mine is the first touchable BlackBerry, His is targeted toward people who want the traditional style, but this is the future of cell phones-

D: (on the Bold) it’s the best version of the traditional BlackBerry, it’s the best of what made BlackBerry, BlackBerry.

CJ: Tech heads will go for the Storm.

D: The Storm, straight swagger jacks the iPhone!

CJ: But it’s the best copy!

D: The [Storm] keypad feels like hydraulics, you have to press harder, it makes typing slower.

Favorite Features

CJ’s Storm: Song recognition feature that connects you directly to a music store, 1 gig internal and 8 gig card (up to 16gigs) 4000 songs aprox, voice recognition, 6 hours talk time and, 15 standby, large screen, WiFi

D’s Bold: Voice recognition, 4.5 hours talk time, 13.5 days standby, music videos, voice notes and pictures, messages, design - a black leather back plate, turn by turn GPS, QWERTY keypad.

Video
The Storm’s lack of a keypad, made way for a much larger display. However, the contrast ratio was not as good as the Bold’s and the colors were less vibrant.

The Bold had a smaller display but the color quality and clarity was excellent for watching videos. In our quick test the Bold was the better contender when it came to video.

Sound
Though the sound quality was close on both sets, and surprisingly crisp for cell phones when on full volume but the Bold had the audio edge over the Storm.

Cameras
The Storm’s (3.2 megapixel camera + built in flash) picture is clearer and the colors are more vibrant.

The Bold’s (2 megapixel camera + built in flash w/ 5x zoom) picture was bit blurred and the colors were muted.

Check out a comparison of picture quality below.

D: (speaking on the x5 zoom, defending his phone’s loss) But you can hit someone from a block away, bam!

Internet Speed
We tried to see which phone would load TheSource.com webpage first but since both sets use WiFi our test couldn’t really determine which was faster.

Keypad

The Storm’s touch screen is pressure-sensitive and takes some getting used to. Typing can be tricky and is a bit slower.

If I were a blackberry fanatic I would choose the bold because it would be harder to type without bottons, besidesthey’re pretty much the same the only difference really is touch screen an apparently the camera big deal who cares, personally blackberry’s are not my thing anyway.

Fb916. itz pretty eazy. I hav a machine dat i can use which has Braille keyz and i jus memorize da keyz on a computer. Also, da computers i use talk and da machine i use has a braille display instead of a screen with print. And texting, itz eazy. Once u know da numbers u start learnin da letterz pretty quik.

The review is wrong. The Storm does not use WiFi. That’s one of the major knocks on it. That said, I would go for the Storm.

I got the Bold and it is my 3rd Blackberry model to go through. It is amazing. I have a nce digital camera so I don’t really care about the lack of camera quality. I’ve only used camera phones in emergency/spontaneous situations. I am also pro NON-touch screen, however if they came out with a Bold that also had a touch screen, that would be money, especially for browsin. I know I need to update the software on the Bold (see crackberry.com forums for more info) I am obsessed wtih my BB Bold. So much that I am drunk at a bar making a post online!!! Go Bold or Go Home!!!! Gig em! Rachel

I’ve tried both devices and the bold actually had more advantages. As I was typing on the storm it felt like you had to move the entire screen. I also like the feel of the bold a lot better. Especially when I felt the keys, I kept messing up on the storm. I guess we can all get use to it, but def like the bold better. I also found that the speed was def faster than the storm. The only thing I really liked about the storm is how sleek it looked, but I was really disappointed with it all together.

Guys I just recieved my Storm but cannot get used to the keyboard so its going back. The other down side if you are a BB users is that you seem to loose a lot of the functionality that is resident in the Bold and other so called lesser versions.

Next call is for a bold
