Dimepiece: DJ Beverly Bond

DJ Beverly Bond is known for getting the party started. DJ to the elite, Bond has rocked events for the likes of Michael Jordan, Prince and Jay-Z. But it takes a lot more than a couple of stars to impress her.
Words: BRENT WOODIE
Beverly Bond is not your everyday DJ. A former Wilhelmina model, this spinner is as stunning behind the DJ booth as she is in front of the camera. But looking good on the 1’s and 2’s is not her only claim to fame. In 2006, she started the organization Black Girls Rock to empower young black females and honor those who encourage positive imagery. The only female member of the exclusive Heavy Hitter DJs, Beverly Bond is opening new avenues for female DJs and looking damn good doing it.

You have developed quite a reputation for being a tastemaker in music. Can you name five songs perfect for setting the mood right?
That’s a hard one. I would have to say Ginuwine’s “Stingy.” Andre 3000’s “Prototype” would be good. Let’s see, Dead Prez’ “Mind Sex” and you got to have Prince, “Beautiful One.” To end it off, go with Joi’s “Lick.”
Thank you, I will be using those tonight. Obviously you have accomplished so much as a DJ, like being the only female member of the Heavy Hitters. What advice would you give to a struggling female DJ?
I DJ for Michael Jordan and I take in a lot of his speeches. He said, “Love the game and the game will love you.’” And I agree with that for DJ-ing. Put your all into it and it’s going to pay off for you. When I came into the game, I wasn’t looking for fame; I was doing it as a hobby. I approach it even today like I love it.
You also contribute to female empowerment with your Black Girls Rock organization. Could you talk about some of the things your organization has in store?
I have the Black Girls Rock Awards coming up in October. The first year we did it in Brooklyn at the PowerHouse Arena and everyone loved it. Year two we did it at Lincoln Center and it was a major event. We honor some of the most important and positive black images we have in the world like Common, Sylvia Rhone and Missy Elliott.
It sounds like a great organization. Being a woman of color representing a Hip-Hop generation, what made you begin the program?
I started the organization as a reaction to women being degraded and humiliated. It’s a response to their not even portraying a balance of women of color; I can’t turn the channel and see something else. The problem isn’t with the video girl. The problem is [not] having other images available for black women in Hip-Hop. We need more diversity.

I didn’t realize a positive black woman who cares about the future of her community and the women in it AND one who can outrock her male dj counterparts at a party WHILE becoming a legend in a male dominated hip hop arena left such a sour taste in your mouth…..AND she looks fabulous!!!

But let me stop here I don’t want to overload your very small brain circuits with too much information. Jaybomb you must have a different standard of beauty. Not knocking your taste but Miss Bond is a dime in every sense of the word. She is simply gorgeous! I have seen better pictures of her though- but she still looks good here.

Beverly Bond is beautiful inside and out. She’s using her fame as a platform to address the image of Black women in hiphop through her organization. This is awesome. The industry needs more positive women like Bond.
