Let’s Talk About Pep

The Source recently sat down with Sandy “Pepa” Denton to discuss her new book, Let’s Talk About Pep. In the book, Pepa discusses being molested as a child, her abusive relationships, and of course, her rise to fame as one half of the hottest female Hip-Hop group ever.

So, what do her exes and children think about her sharing her life story with the world?

Click through to find out.

The Source: What was the hardest thing for you to share in writing this book?

Pepa: A few things. I’ve been carrying the issue I went thru with the molestation. That was difficult to share.

Also, reflecting on the relationships. I think, ‘Damn, what was I thinking?’

It was like a therapy couch for me. The outcome is rewarding because I wanted people to know they are not alone. People see me as a star but, I am also the girl next door who had some trying times.

I share the story of being that girl in love and the guy doesn’t want to share that feeling and me having to realize I am worth so much more.

The Source:
When did you start working on the book?

It started almost two years ago. I remembered everything. I didn’t have a journal, my story just stayed with me.

The Source:
Your daughter’s probably a little young for it, but has your teenage son read the book?

Pepa
: I tried to talk to him about the book. Then last night his girlfriend’s mom wanted me to sign her copy and he told me he wanted to read it.

He said, ‘I want to get to know you.’ And I said, ‘OK, but let’s talk about it first.’ When we’ve talked about some of that stuff [molestation, domestic abuse] before he takes it so personal because I’m his mom, but now he’s ready to hear it.

It’s a deep book, so I need to brace him

The Source
: Have any of the guys you discuss in the book read it?

Oh my God, yes.

Prince Markie D (of the Fat Boys), he has a radio show, and I did his interview. He said, ‘If I ever hurt you, I’m very sorry.” And I was like, ‘Wow!’ It’s about growth. That was me then and this is me now - you just gotta grow. But somebody else was upset…

The Source
: It seems over the last couple of years that every woman who writes a book and discusses her relationships gets compared to Karrine Steffans and Confessions of a Video Vixen. Were you at all worried about that?

Well, I think my book is different. It wasn’t about names; I didn’t want people to get caught up with the people. It’s about how I kept continuously getting in the same relationships and why that went on for so long.

We could get caught-up in names but, my story was really about me. It wasn’t about blaming, I’m to blame too.

im already skeptikal on her book cause she spent years kinda implying that treach was physically abusive to her then when her book comes out and treach is threatning with a suit she sayin naw it wasnt physical it was verbal lol whatever that discredits her stories off top for me…

I read the book. I feel she did a good job. It was nice to read a book about a entertainer that didnt focus on who or how many people she slept with.

I THINK THE BOOK IS COOL AND ALL!!!!! BUT……..SHE IS REALLY DOING IT FOR EXPOSURE SHE NEEDS SOME BREAD, AND ATTENTION. AND FOR HER TO SAY IT WAS VERBAL AND NOT PHYSICAL SAYS ALOT ABOUT HER CHARACTER. ONCE AGAIN SHE NEEDS ATTENTION.

Listen Ladies and Gentemen (said respectfully) - Unless you’ve walked a mile in her shoes, you will never be able to understand why she made the decisions she made. So at least respect the fact that shes published a book. Annoncing “she’s not afraid or ashamed” of her lifes decision.
Everyday you encounter something or someone that will affect/alter your life or life choice (regardless if you realize it or not). I know she aint the only person who you feel made some dumb choices right? Well, guess what - somebody feels the same about you! Regardless of how hard you try, somebody will always have something negative to say.
The media already publicize us as useless. We should try harder to say positive, uplifting, strengthing things rather than negative. Then we will have more than one “Oprah Winfrey/Maya Angelo/Rosa Parks”

I never thought of Peppa publishing a book, no offense. I’m considering adding this to my collection. Everyone knows Peppa the RAPPER but not Peppa, the HUMAN BEING. I guess reading this book will help me get inside Peppa’s mind.

Well for me personally I wouldnt read the book because I think she just got bored and needed something to do and needed the money, a lot of cleberties come out with a book or something about how they were abused, why now, you didnt want to talk about it before why talk about it now. More power to her for writing a book about her abuse, but this is what I say, its really easy to write a book about your life, so i hope she dont go thinking she could be a writer now it takes alot more than a life story to make it in the writing business. Good luck pepa with your book hope you make that money you need.
